Collectables: Dorothy Parker

A writer, poet and critic revered for her acerbic and lightening wit, she adorned the pages of The New Yorker and Vanity Fair through the 1920’s and beyond.

Challenged once at the Algonquin Round Table to come up with an original use of the word ‘horticulture’ in a sentence, she shot back:

You can lead a horticulture, but you can’t make her think.

Her aphoristic quotes and poetry still hold water today, many just as dry and scathing as they were ninety years ago.

Résumé is one of her more celebrated poems:

Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

A surefire pick-me-up for the disconsolate souls among you. She had a penchant for death; her first book was called
Enough Rope. She herself thrice tried to commit suicide, fortunately failing each time.

She had her say on love too, including the couplet:

Men seldom make passes
at girls who wear glasses.

I am sure she would have had something to say about contact lenses.

PowerPuff Girls

So called RnB divas of the Noughties need to fall back for the duration of this blog post. They cannot compare to their counterparts of yesteryear particularly those of the late Nineties. In fact i don't like the label "Diva" for my dream team of feline feminines circa '92-99 - because back then it was less about the fame, bling and glamour and more about the head boppin' beats that are still fresh in ones memory, more than a decade later. I mean who today can compare to Adina Howard, En Vogue, SWV, Toni Braxton, 702 [the list goeseth on] - Nicole Scherzinger, Rhianna!? Eh Neeeeh!!!! Anyway have a gander at the new Fader - find one of those classic Pure Swing compilations and have a nostalgia party. Its good for your soul.

Foul Play

Hilary Clinton plays a dirty game by insinuating that she is still in the race because of the possibility of Barrack Obama being assassinated. This is an outrageous claim. Imagine the uproar if it was Barrack who had made such assumptions about his desperate and deluded opponent. I just hope there aren't any craizy fools out there stupid enough to manifest Hilary's dirty talk into a reality!

Life is cheap nowadays!!

The Chronicles of Humility

"The point is that each person’s pride is in competition with everyone else’s pride. It is because I wanted to be the big noise at the party that I am so annoyed at someone else being the big noise. Two of a trade never agree. Now what you want to get clear is that Pride is essentially competitive- it is competitive by its very nature-while the other vices are competitive only, so to speak, by accident. Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. We say that people are proud of being rich, or clever, or good-looking, but they are not. They are proud of being richer, or cleverer, or better-looking than others. If everyone else became equally rich, or clever, or good-looking, there would be nothing to be proud about. It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone." C.S.Lewis

Different looks under the same name.

Exactitudes is a photographic project that encapsulates what the Dnae familae represents. The project by Photographer Ari Verslus uses a series of photographic collections, each one composed of 12welve separate photographs, featuring people dressed in the same attire holding the same poses - projecting the paradox of dress codes.

While we want to make our sense of style visible and obvious, revealing a certain amount of conformism - proving that looking like your neighbour is reassuring - at the same time we hope to highlight our own sense of individuality. This project illustrates the intimate relationship humans have with their garms, the image we have of ourselves and the image we aim to project onto others. What I appreciate the most about this body of work is that fact that project has be presented in its natural, raw and unmodified form. "O" is for Original-itaaaaaaaaaaaaay.
