Today, a short story for you, from a man known for his brevity.
As he said: "Boiling it down always, rather than spreading it out thin."
Without further ado I give you Ernest Hemingway's:

A Clean Well-Lighted Place

Enjoy it while it lasts.

"The word “lethologica” describes the state of not being able to remember the word you want."

One had every intention of saying something quirky and profound but I'm lost for words. All that comes to mind is "choong" in every sense of the word.

Shake Your Pum Pum

Lee 'Scratch' Perry a.k.a The First Lord of Reggae a.k.a The Upsetter a.k.a Pipecock Jaxxon has just dropped his latest album "Repentance". He is considered the pioneer of Reggae and Dub, being the first to make all the rules and the first to break them with two fingers up in the face of compliance. Constantly breaking the mold throughout his career he is still bringing it at age 72. I have not had a chance to listen to any other songs on ths new LP but according to my man Kwes he is mosdef-inately going to upset some of the old guard with his new rebelliously progressive sounds. From the sound of "Pum Pum" I think he is on point. Make your minds up for yourself. He is going to be performing at Bestival at the Isle of Wight this year - so if you have a ticket, bring some cheech and eyes will sees yous there with some complimentary chong!

On Hand

While we are on the subject of using your hands more, here is a mini showcase of some more hand work by main man, illustrator Maurice Straughan. A friend and former club hopping sidekick during my university salad days. Hailing from the infamous northern "toon" that is Newcastle Upon Tyne, Maurice put us on some of his latest pieces. He has worked with a few artists including Deadly Combination and Supanice for their album sleeves, so if you are a musician on the look out for affordable sleeve artwork be sure to give him a shout by clicking on any of the images. His artwork is also available for sale and commissions are available at sustainable prices that would send even your mother's mother into a state of hysterical rapture.

Hands On

CIMG3823

This week, I have found the time to do things I used to have all the time for. Listening to old skool beats from the vintage CD collection - RnB thuggin' and chongin' with my main dudes. Most of this past week I have tried to stay well clear of the cyber world and have been using my hands a lot more...
Enough of the filthy thoughts already, but then again, one could say I have been sketching my fantasies and dreams - yes, a thick bum bunned lady with curves that would knock the confidence off a curb!

This week has been dedicated to favorite pastimes; a series of doodles on scraps of papier. I began work developing a few concepts for the next collection for Dnae Genes, hence the lack of bloggin' action.*apologies all* As of right now I'm thinking of a collection based on "where I'm from and where I'm going." A sort of hybrid of Nigerian inspired prints, wings [signifying flight to the limits of the sky, etcetera etcetera] is just the start, things will inevitably change as the train of thought moves ons...

While rummaging through my old scrap books, eye found an old comic "Sullen - Master of Darkness" I made way back during my school days [circa 1996] it was a story about a masked, crusading, stoical hero - a sort of African spinoff of my favorite comic of all time - The Lone Ranger. Apart from the drawing, eye have been catching up on the Lone Rangers escapades too.

2 Birds

I had been meaning to do a Bernie Mac post about two weeks back but the procrastinating gene got the best of me. Well, Bernie kind of beat me to it. The comedy King passed away over the weekend and this has inevitably caused an onslaught of blog-epitaphs to one of the greatest comedians of our epoch. Before you go murmuring under your breath in disapproval, please recognize the fact that the Mac was in a league of his own - his jokes were sticky and one could always relate to his raw yet infectious style of comedy. Its only right to pay homage the best way we know how.

Bad news comes in two's apparently. Issac Hayes the Godfather of all things blaxploi-soulful also passed on this weekend. The odd thing is that, both Issac Hayes and Bernie Mac just finished a movie they were working on with Samuel L Jackson. Samuel cant be feeling to sure about himself right about now... "Schuuuuut Your Mouf" after all we, talkin' about Shaft!

1000 Journals

"I have started using my hands more!"

1000 Journals is a film about people whose lives are touched by 1000 traveling journals. These blank journals were released into the world in the summer of 2000, by Someguy, a San Francisco based artist. Some people found a journal, or got it from a friend or stranger. Some signed up on the web and received it in the mail. Some wrote in them, others doodled, pasted in photographs, or added artworks. Some kept them. Some passed them on. There are no rules, and no one really monitors these journals and their movements. And yet, they are connecting tens of thousands of people worldwide, provoking and inspiring them.

In September 2003, one of the 1000, number 526, returned to Someguy, filled. What happened to the other 999? This film tells their stories. 1000 Journals shares the experience of their worldwide journeys, and chronicles the self-governed collaboration of thousands of random people who have added to this global "message in a bottle."

Cup Rockin'

The sequel to yesterdays post translated into street art, goes something like this: "Cup Rocking" Andy Uprock sees it as a graffiti revolution. Simple actions for maximum effect.

Rebel Nation

ninja

"The new rebel is a sceptic and will not entirely trust anything. He has no loyalty; therefore, he can never be really a revolutionist. And the fact that he doubts everything really gets in his way when he wants to denounce anything. For all denunciation implies a moral doctrine of some kind and the modern revolutionist doubts not only the institution he denounces, but the doctrine by which he denounces it.

Thus, he writes one book complaining that imperial oppression insults the purity of women, and then he writes another book, a novel, in which he insults it himself. He curses the Sultan because Christian girls lose their virginity, and then curses Mrs. Grundy because they keep it. As a politician he will cry out that war is a waste of life, and then as a philosopher that all life is a waste of time. A Russian pessimist will denounce a policeman for killing a peasant, and then prove by the highest philosophical principles that the peasant ought to have killed himself. A man denounces marriage as a lie and then denounces aristocratic profligates for treating it as a lie.

He calls a flag a bauble and then blames the oppressors of Poland or Ireland because they take away that bauble. The man of this school goes first to a political meeting, where he complains that savages are treated as if they were beasts. Then he takes his hat and umbrella and goes on to a scientific meeting where he proves that they practically are beasts. In short, the modern revolutionist, being an infinite sceptic, is always engaged in undermining his own mines. In his book on politics he attacks men for trampling on morality, and in his book on ethics he attack morality for trampling on men. Therefore, the modern man in revolt has become practically useless for all purposes of revolt. By rebelling against everything he has lost his right to rebel against anything."
