Generation Nexxxt

After yesterdays post on Eartha Kitt, its only makes sense to move from one generation of mulatto magic to the next. Here is an excerpt from this weeks Time magazine's interview with the Man of the Year - Obama talking 'bout his momma.

Now For a deeply personal question, which you may not feel comfortable answering. Did your grandmother die confidnent you were going to be President?

"You know, I don't know. But I know she voted for me...She was incredulous, I think, until the very end...My grandmother would not have believed that this was possible. Not because of the race issues but because she was just a very Midwesterrn, steady person who generally was skeptical of these kinds of things and would have preferred I'd never gone into politics and done something sensible like try to become a judge or something after law school. My Mother on the other hand, I think would've never had a doubt because she was absolutely convinced that her son and daughter were perfect. So it's a reflection more on their personalities..."

Bye Bye Baby

Eartha Kitt the songstress who penned the ubiquitous festive ballad "Santa Baby" ironically passed away on Christmas Day. You might remember her gruff sexy voice from a number of movies, personally - her most memorable performance was as the feisty Lady Eloise in Boomerang with Eddie Murphy [1992]. Renowned for her blunt "Tell it like it is" personality, a first generation femme fatale of mixed ethnic background. A mutli-talent who broke through the race and gender barriers of America's deep south to stupendous, super-stardom both on stage and on screen. Her carrier spanned over 5ive decades and will live on for a lot more. Nobody ever really dies yo!

Dream Dream Dream

MWMxRevolve_30x30_canvas_10

There is a place in the world where people do not dream, the place where the pipe-dreams die. So dream a dream, ten times as big a dream could be - a dream for them, a dream for you - a dream for me. Dream for those who gave up, for those who never tried - then dream for all the dreams that died. For all our dreams can change the way things are and the way they said things could never be - and if next dude says that all your dreams are too big to come true, keep working on your big dreams till they prove next dude's a fool...

The Innocents

We have all been accused of something we did not do. Worst comes to worst, one might end up being punished or in the most extreme of cases, on death row. Tayrn Simon's photographic work always seeks to bring the hidden truths of our world to light. Her coffee table publication, The Innocents - presents the stories of falsely accused, American men incarcerated by the powers that be [The State]. The Innocents, is the story of those men who know all too well the idea of being guilty until proven innocent. It's a good read - get involved if you please.

" I hope I go to neither heaven nor hell. I wish that at the time of my death that I could go to sleep and never wake up and never have a bad dream. Eternal rest, like you've seen on some tombstones, that's what I hope for. Because I don't want to go through the judgment. I don't want anybody judging me again..." Ron Williamson - Served 11 Years of a death sentence.

Most Underrated

DJ Mehdi has racked up an impressive list of stellar remixes, original productions and arousing mixes. I expect at some time during the xmas period you will have your local disc jokey drop Pocket Piano. He was on point last Saturday at the Chromeo gig, so make sure you don't miss out on seeing him live in Zero Nine.

Europe II You

Moldova
For a country that’s only vaguely known in Europe and all but anonymous to the rest of the world, Moldova may conjure up images of sunflower fields, enormous watermelons, and, I am told, amazingly friendly people. The country that gave us Ana Gurau, the deconstructionist, also bestowed upon us O-Zone, lest we forget.

Mondongo Exhibition

...Three witches stirring it up in a cauldron…. attempting to alchemize, to distill and to ooze all the chaos and the all possible “all-ness” in it . . . " — [Mondongo Manifesto]
Mondongosmallinvite

Mondongo is the word for a traditional Argentine tripe stew. It is also the name for the internationally renowned Argentine artist collective who will have their first UK exhibition at Maddox Arts this winter. Mondongo make their work from a ‘cauldron’ of ingredients: “We've used a huge variety of materials in our art, depending on what best reinforces the concept of the work, - it's always a process of experimentation until we finish it. We’ll keep experimenting with materials ‘til death comes!"

A favored medium is food, freeze-dried and vacuum-sealed in layers of resin, everything from slabs of meat to Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers. It’s all about the lowest common denominator of consumer living - trinkets, cookies, sausages, jelly babies: the work revels in the tawdry and the grotesque.

mondongo

All the obersvant fashion heads might have noticed some Mondongo images that Comme Des Garçons has used in the store’s 2008-printed material in the Dover Street Market. The Exhibition is on at the Maddox Arts until the 10th of January 09.

A.I.B
Ain't It Black, London's house party in a club, celebrates it's one year anniversary this Thursday, Dec 4th, at Favela Chic.

I shot the shit with the two creators, Chonsak and Ibrahim. The boys are known for their sartorial expertise, dance moves and musical taste.

If Aint It Black was a look what would it be?
Ibrahim: Shoulder pads, Rhythm Nation Janet Jackson style.
Chonsak: Typeface message tees , gold chains and high tops.
Who are your musical style icons?
I: Andre 3k, Rick James, Prince and Morris Day. Andre is heavily influenced by Prince Charles, who can blame him. With those ears you need a good dress sense to distract folks.
C: Lisa Left Eye, Missy Elliot and Boy 2 Men. That whole preppy wholesome boyband look, jodeci boots and base jackets.
A.I.B
What Item of Clothing defines London?
C: Dr Martin boots, skinheads we're taking it back.
I: Skinny Jeans. That line in (
Can't wear skinny jeans cause my nuts don't fit) Swagger Like Us wasn't written by Londoners.
How do you feel about kids style today? Isn't a bit ubiquitous?
I: They tend to mix and match. Granted they are more open to trying out new things. Maybe even dungarees.
C: It's a mashup of eras. It's no longer just one genre, you could get a Africa Bambaataa/Cameo mix going on. It's not all hero worship, people just like that retro feel. Before you could only wear one thing and it was a uniform.
A.I.B
You Guys run a Club night, so let's judge your taste. Who are your favourite DJ's?
C: Apart from our resident DJ's , I would have to say RDJ2
I: Dam Funk
